An intense and shallow undersea earthquake jolted a portion of Indonesia's Aceh province on Saturday, with no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey indicated that the earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 5.9, was centered 362 kilometers (225 miles) east of Sinabang, a coastal town in Aceh province, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency assured that there was no tsunami threat but cautioned about potential aftershocks, assigning a preliminary magnitude of 6.3. It is common for early quake measurements to show variations, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).

Given Indonesia's location on the "Ring of Fire," an expanse of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin, the country, with a population exceeding 270 million, frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake on November 21 claimed at least 331 lives and left nearly 600 people injured in West Java's Cianjur city. This incident marked the deadliest earthquake in Indonesia since the 2018 quake and tsunami in Sulawesi, which claimed the lives of approximately 4,340 people.

Recalling the catastrophic event in 2004, an immensely powerful Indian Ocean quake triggered a tsunami that resulted in the deaths of over 230,000 individuals in a dozen countries, with a significant number of casualties occurring in Indonesia's Aceh province.
