The Bahrain Red Crescent Society (BRCS) organised a remote training programme on "Home Garden" in cooperation with the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross organisation “ARCO”.

Representatives of the Red Crescent and Red Cross organisations and societies in several GCC and Arab countries participated in the programme.

The programme focused on urging everyone to cultivate and green all possible spaces in their homes and workplaces, by developing existing gardens or planting new ones. The programme was mainly supervised and attended by Dr. Nilofer Jahromi, Head of Charity Agricultural Project at the Society, assisted by the team members of agricultural engineers’ environmental specialists.

The three-day programme addressed diverse topics, including introducing the best plants suitable for cultivation in the garden according to the region, climate, and desire, in addition to the irrigation system in gardens, the reproduction of plants, recycling of garden waste, and greenhouses.

During the programme, the role of individuals in protecting the environment in the GCC states and the Arab world was highlighted through the interest in expanding green spaces inside and outside their homes and workplaces.

This training programme comes within the framework of the Bahrain Red Crescent Society's keenness to include the environmental aspect in the framework of its relief and humanitarian work, as environmental disasters such as floods, desertification, and severe heat waves constitute one of the most serious challenges that afflict humans and reducing their risk is a responsibility of everyone.

It is noteworthy that the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies recently launched a campaign regarding the need to act urgently to confront climate warming, and the Federation warned of a wider catastrophe from the COVID-19 pandemic in light of the continuing climate change and its great danger in the med- to long term to the region, the planet and the mankind.
