Bapco Energies, the integrated energy company leading the energy transition in the Kingdom of Bahrain, has announced its membership in the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0).

As a participant in the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership Framework, Bapco Energies commits to annually disclosing methane emissions from both operated and non-operated assets. This involves utilizing the most accurate measurement methods and science-based frameworks to report emissions comprehensively across all assets.

This strategic move aligns with the company's dedication to reducing carbon emissions in accordance with the Kingdom’s National Energy Strategy. Bapco Energies aims to implement cutting-edge solutions to minimize emissions, in line with the Kingdom's decarbonization targets. During COP26, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, pledged that Bahrain would achieve Net-Zero by 2060, reduce emissions by 30 percent through decarbonization and efficiency initiatives by 2035, and double the deployment of renewables.

Mark Thomas, Group Chief Executive of Bapco Energies, commented on the partnership, stating, "We are proud to join the United Nations Environment Programme's Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 Framework. This globally recognized reporting standard allows us to comprehensively track and compare our progress with industry peers. Today’s announcement at COP28 reflects our responsibility and commitment to delivering real climate action. As signatories to the OGMP 2.0, we are dedicated to achieving our net-zero targets through a comprehensive decarbonization plan, especially addressing unabated sources. Reducing methane emissions in our industry is a key global opportunity to preserve the environment and enhance the quality of life for everyone."

Giulia Ferrini, the OGMP 2.0 Programme Manager, expressed excitement about welcoming Bapco Energies of Bahrain to the initiative, emphasizing that action by national oil companies is crucial for global methane progress. By joining the Partnership, Bapco Energies demonstrates its commitment to improved methane reporting and management, supporting Bahrain’s climate efforts under the Paris Agreement and Global Methane Pledge in time for COP28.

OGMP 2.0, the flagship oil and gas reporting and mitigation framework of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), stands as the only comprehensive, measurement-based international reporting framework for the energy sector. It works to enhance the accuracy and transparency of methane emissions reporting, crucial for meaningful mitigation efforts.
